We know that sunlight serves a four-fold purpose in the life our
birds—it regulates the internal clock; both visible and UV light is
used for vision; it assists in the sense of well being of the animal;
and it provides necessary wavelengths for proper metabolism. It is a
combination of these things that result in healthy, happy birds!
Birds see UV light—it is a whole extra dimension to their vision.
Without it is very much like being color blind would be for us. They
also need these ranges for proper health. Without them their world is drab
and dull, and many problems with health and behaviors emerge.
Most birds that live inside do not get enough quality light—and no UV
that is necessary for vision and general health. Regular household light and light through windows is also very lacking in other parts of
the visible spectrum as well. Adding full spectrum light to your
bird’s environment restores the natural balance—and reduces the
possibility of picking, plucking, behavioral, and health problems.
Many “full spectrum” lights are available on the market. Almost none
of them provide a true, balanced light spectrum that is rich in UV for
vision and health and at the same time have the necessary levels of
yellow and red that your bird requires. Most fluorescent tubes have
unbalanced levels of blue and green that offer too much of these colors. This is true of every compact fluorescent device and other brands of fluorescent tube marketed for avian use.
